International transportation of super-heavy chemical equipment from Weihai to Veliky Novgorod
International transportation of super-heavy chemical equipment from Weihai to Veliky Novgorod

About the project

Organization and execution of an international shipment of super-heavy, oversized chemical equipment from China to Russia. The cargo—medium-temperature carbon monoxide converters—was being delivered to a major chemical production complex in Veliky Novgorod. The operation involved two simultaneous trips and required unique technical solutions at every stage—from transhipment at the Chinese-Kazakh border to dismantling and restoring utility lines along the entire route.

Key Project Parameters

  • Route: Weihai, Shandong Province (PRC) - Veliky Novgorod (RF)
  • Border crossings: Khorgos (China – Kazakhstan), Ozinki (Kazakhstan – Russia)
  • Number of flights: 2 simultaneous
  • Operation start date: April 2025.

Cargo characteristics

Flight No. 1:

  • Medium-temperature carbon monoxide converter (item 1104-DA): 12,762 x 5,250 x 4,800 mm, weight 156,000 kg
  • Spare parts box (ZIP): 6,200 × 2,400 × 600 mm, weight 7,000 kg

Flight No. 2:

  • Medium-temperature carbon monoxide converter (item 1104-DA): 12,762 x 5,250 x 4,800 mm, weight 156,000 kg

Total cargo weight: 319,000 kg

Transport solution

Each converter utilized a ballast truck with a 12-axle modular semitrailer with a 13-meter platform, providing the required axle load distribution for a 156-ton load. This configuration ensured the required axle load distribution for a 156-ton load with a width of 5.25 meters.

The transshipment at the Chinese-Kazakh border was carried out using two truck cranes with a lifting capacity of 200 and 400 tons simultaneously for each unit.

Project Complexity

Each converter weighs 156 tons and is 5.25 meters wide, requiring a tailored engineering approach to every stage of the operation. The 4.8-meter height of the cargo, combined with the height of the lowboy itself, necessitated a detailed inspection of its clearance under bridges, overpasses, and other overhead structures along the entire route from the coast of Shandong Province to Veliky Novgorod. Each section of the route was inspected in advance, and the carrier confirmed its guarantee of safe passage along the agreed-upon route.

Along the entire route, utility lines—road signs, lighting structures, and wires—were dismantled and subsequently restored to ensure the unimpeded passage of oversized road trains. Special permits were obtained in all jurisdictions: China, Kazakhstan, and Russia.

Each voyage was assisted by a surveyor who compiled a detailed report on the condition of the cargo during loading.

A range of services within the project

  • Provision of specialized transport for loading
  • Transshipment at the border with cranes with a lifting capacity of 200 and 400 tons
  • Registration of transit declarations in all transit countries
  • Providing financial guarantees for customs payments
  • Obtaining special permits for transportation
  • Dismantling and restoration of communications along the entire route
  • Loading survey and preparation of survey report
  • Coverage of all additional costs arising during transportation

Results

  • Successful completion of two simultaneous flights with a cargo weight of 156 tons each
  • Handling of super-heavy equipment at the border using cranes with a total lifting capacity of 600 tons
  • Full customs support across three jurisdictions
  • Demonstration of NG-NEGABARIT's expertise in organizing long-distance transportation of super-heavy indivisible cargo
